“It’s like a five star hotel,” said a patient, as soon as we walked through the door.
“I’m moving in!” joked her visiting friend.
It’s clear LOROS Hospice is here for the living and totally committed to making fond memories.
Last week, Clare Bloomfield took myself, Stavros and Dominique on a tour to show us where our fundraising efforts will be going.
As our Charity of the Year, The Gresham Aparthotel has pledged to raise £5,000 for LOROS, a local charity that provides free, high-quality, compassionate care and support to 2,500 terminally ill adult patients, their family, and carers, across Leicestershire & Rutland.
Only 1 in 5 of those patients is funded by the NHS, the other 80% depend on donations.
The support on offer is outstanding and extensive: councillors for young family members, outpatient care, alternative therapies, a state of the art training centre, communal areas - not to mention the wards and staff.
Everyone had a smile on their face. Everyone said hello.
Clare took us out into the courtyard, a beautiful and poignant area filled with plants in the Spring sun that transforms into a petting zoo, or winter wonderland, or a secret garden throughout the year.
It is a wonderful place, the nurses are unbelievably dedicated to their work and their patients.
It’s easy to see why it is so well known and loved across the county, and how vital their support is as family members grow older.
That’s why our fundraising is so important.
My training for the Leicester Marathon is well underway - so I tell everyone!
We’re proud to support the LOROS Golf Day in May, and we’ll be doing a “mini” triathlon in the summer to commemorate the Olympics.
We have also renamed our premium 2-bedroom balcony suite to the ‘LOROS Sky Apartment’, with a donation from each booking going to the charity.
There’s a lot more planned up our sleeves, and we appreciate any support you can give to help LOROS make a real difference.
If you can, please make a donation to our Just Giving page for LOROS, or follow The Gresham Aparthotel to keep up to date with all our activities.
The cost of providing one bed on LOROS’ inpatient ward, along with specialist nursing care for a patient approaching the end of their life, is £602 per day, including washing, feeding, monitoring the patient’s condition, talking to them, soothing their anxiety, and holding their hand.
The Gresham Aparthotel’s support is funding this personalised care that every patient deserves at the end of their life.
