A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE GRESHAM
The Gresham building is a superb example of Leicester’s Victorian architectural heritage, formerly home to two cherished institutions.
Originally designed by Leicester architect Isaac Barradale in 1884, it comprised eight separate buildings and was occupied by Joseph Johnson’s department store for nearly 80 years. In 1962 it was purchased by retailer Fenwick, the iconic emerald green a part of Leicester city centre until 2017.
The Gresham Aparthotel opened in November 2021 following a £17 million refurbishment, comprising retail units, and 121 apartments and studios.
In 2017, three units were awarded Grade II listed status, and in 2023 the building was recognised with a prestigious blue plaque from Leicester's Civic Society.
